Leupold GX-2 Digital Golf Rangefinder

Leupold GX-2 Laser Rangefinder Review

The Leupold GX-2 laser rangefinder identifies distances to targets such as flags, sand traps and other areas on a course. If offers PinHunter and PLeupold GX-2 reviewrism Lock technology for narrowing in on targets, including reflective prisms.

True Golf Range considers various criteria, including the slope of the shot and atmospheric conditions, and matches it to the necessary distance in order to adjust it or recommend the best club to use.

As one of the lightest and most compact models, the GX-2 features a 6x magnification, scanning mode and a variety of crosshairs. Enhancements from the previous model include its Prism Lock feature as well as resistance to rain and fog.

Pros

  • Size and Weight: Among laser rangefinders with slope compensation the Leupold GX-2 is one of the smallest and lightest.
  • Features: Aside from its ability to compensate for angle, the GX-2 can recommend clubs based on outside conditions, lock on to reflective prisms, scan landscapes and resist distraction or damage caused by fog or rain.

Cons

  • Steadiness: According to some users, at longer distances the Leupold GX-2 is hard to keep steady without a tripod when attempting to lock on a pin..
  • Display: Against very dark backgrounds the distance can be hard to distinguish in the display.

Ease of Use

The GX-2 features an exceptionally compact design and is easy to hold with its vertical design and easy rubber gripping areas. Its display can be focused with a twist of the eyepiece, although it is a bit more difficult to twist compared to other devices. The unit’s panning mode allows the user to scan a landscape to obtain distances to multiple points by only holding the laser firing button.

When this occurs, however, the GX-2 updates distance readings quite slower than many competing models. If the device pans too quickly across targets that are spaced far apart, it may skip when providing updated distances. This not only occurs at longer distances, it updates at the same rate no matter how far the target is.

Features

The Leupold GX-2 allows the user to choose between yards and meters when viewing the distance. PinHunter technology makes it easier to acquire the distance to specific targets by filtering out data from more reflective objects in the background. Instead it focuses on acquiring information for the closer objects within the crosshair.

Leupold is known for using the device’s pin-locating mode at all times, including when the user pans across an area to acquire distance for many objects. Other devices require the user to alternate between pin-locating and scanning modes. The unit’s Fog Mode improves performance in foggy and rainy conditions by eliminating affected readings.

Prism Lock makes readings easier when playing on courses that feature flagsticks with reflective prisms. When the device picks up a flagstick with a prism it emits a beeping sound and freezes the display at the determined distance. True Golf Range provides a distance that is adjusted for slope between the player and the target, in addition to adjusting the line-of-sight distance based on the effects of temperature and altitude.

The unit can also recommend the appropriate club based on its adjusted distances. The GX-2 also offers the ability to select from different crosshairs, with seven different choices.

Obtaining Readings

At up to 200 yards the device easily acquires targets, only showing difficulty around 250 yards. In the high 200s it can still pick up distances half the time with a dark background. When True Golf Range is engaged, the device is not as quick to capture targets.

Cost/Value

The Leupold GX-2 retails for $400 or less, making it one of the more affordable rangefinders. It makes for an exceptional deal considering its many features including Prism Lock, Fog Mode and True Golf Range.

Leupold GX-2 Review – Final Thoughts

The Leupold GX-2 offers impressive performance in a compact size. It provides a number of useful features for acquiring targets and adjusting distances when necessary. All of its capabilities combined with its price make it a worthwhile consideration to say the least. >>> Click Here for Pricing, Pictures and Reviews on Amazon.com
